Birthday photo booth ideas for every age, from 18 to 70

By La Cabine Bretonne · published · updated

A photo booth turns a birthday into a party people remember: everyone leaves with a print, and the guest of honour ends up with dozens of smiling faces. The trick is finding the right theme. An 18th looks nothing like a 60th dinner. Here are ideas by age, with the props and frame to match, followed by how to customise the print.

Choosing a birthday theme that hangs together

The photo booth theme doesn’t need to be spectacular. What matters is that it fits with everything else: the venue decor, the music, any dress code and, of course, the personality of the person you’re celebrating.

  • Start from a passion: music, film, travel, a sport.
  • Or from an era: the year they were born, the decade they turned twenty, a craze they loved.
  • Or simply from a mood: glamorous and golden, bright and cheerful, retro and quirky.

Once you have the theme, carry it through three things: the props, the backdrop and the frame printed around the photos. That last one is what guests take home, so it’s worth getting right. For the first two, see our guide to photo booth props and backdrops.

18th and 21st: neon, karaoke and the dance floor

At this age, the party is usually a late night with lots of trips to the booth and whole groups squeezing in front of the camera. Go for energy and colour.

Pink Neon spells out the name in glowing letters on a dark wall, like a sign flickering on. Karaoke turns each print into a stage memory, with a line running along the bottom like on-screen lyrics. Dance Floor brings chequerboard tiles and colourful spotlights. For props: oversized glasses, inflatable microphones, neon wigs.

Consider a 2×6 photo strip: it lines up several poses, perfect for a run of silly faces with friends.

30th: cocktails, disco and a night with friends

A 30th often happens around a pop-up bar or on a dance floor. Two directions work particularly well.

  • Drinks that run late: Cocktail Bar, with its glasses, citrus and ice cubes, takes the name of your pop-up bar or a slogan in place of the sample heading.
  • A disco night: Disco Ball plays with mirror facets in purple and silver. Add a glitter ball to the ceiling, feather boas and sequins, and the whole disco party collection is there for more variations.

Either way, put the name and age on the frame: 30 deserves to be shown off, and guests will see it on every print.

40th: an elegant black and gold evening

For many people, a 40th is a chance for a proper do, dressed up, sometimes with a sit-down dinner. Black and gold is the natural choice.

Golden Night has a dedicated field for the age next to the names and date, on a glittering black background. Golden Elegance — Centre Photo relies on a single large, polished photo, with three lines for the name, age and date. Gatsby, in deep aubergine, ivory and champagne, reinvents Art Deco for a Roaring Twenties party. More black and gold looks are in the black and gold collection.

Matching props: feathers, bow ties, fake cigarette holders and cardboard champagne glasses.

50th: a trip back to their youth

A 50th is the perfect excuse for a nod to the years of their youth. A retro theme usually lands: it amuses old friends and introduces the younger guests to another era.

Rockabilly brings out all the swagger of the 1950s, with cherries and a deep teal and bright red contrast. American Diner sets the party at the counter of a diner. Vinyl gives every print the look of an LP, ideal if the playlist is full of the hits of their youth. You’ll find more ideas in the retro birthday collection.

An idea that often goes down well: display photos of the birthday person at twenty near the booth, and invite guests to recreate the pose.

60th and 70th: keepsakes for the whole family

From sixty onwards, the party often brings several generations together: children, grandchildren, lifelong friends. The photo booth becomes a way to get everyone into the same picture.

1970s Polaroid borrows the look of an old instant snapshot, with a handwritten caption: guests leave with a frame that seems to have slipped out of a family album. Champagne, more understated, looks like a glass raised for a toast and suits a lunch as well as a dinner.

Here, a 4×6 print with one or two large photos works well: family groups fit more comfortably, and older guests appreciate a print where faces are easy to recognise. Put a chair near the booth for anyone who can’t stand for long.

What to put on a birthday photo booth frame

The frame comes down to three elements: a heading, a name with the age, and the date. The heading can be heartfelt or completely tongue-in-cheek, depending on the tone of the party.

  • Just the name and age: Julie 30.
  • A playful nod: Officially Vintage, Forever 25 at Heart, Vintage 1976.
  • The name of the night, if the party has a theme: Disco Night, Marc’s Ball.

For many more ideas, our guide to birthday and christening photo booth wording covers every age. And if the birthday is a surprise, keep the frame under wraps until the day: seeing their name on every print always makes an impression.

Customise the print in a few minutes

Choose the design that fits your theme, then open the editor, for example customise Golden Night. Replace the names, age and date, move or resize a line if needed, and change the colours to match your decor: the background, each colour in the design or a single line of text. The preview updates live, and your draft is saved automatically on your device, with no account to create.

When you download, you get a PNG overlay at full print resolution, transparent where the photos go, ready for dslrBooth or your supplier’s booth. All our birthday designs are on the birthday page, and the birthday party collection gathers the most festive ones.
