Engagement party photo booth: frames, wording and planning

By La Cabine Bretonne · published

An engagement party is often the first time both families and the couple’s friends come together. A photo booth fits right in: it gets guests mingling, gives everyone a keepsake and hands the couple a first album of their story together. Here is how to choose the frame, adapt its wording and run the booth.

Why a photo booth works at an engagement party

At an engagement party, many guests are meeting for the first time: one set of parents meets the other’s friends, future bridesmaids and groomsmen get acquainted. The photo booth creates easy moments to pose together, with no speeches or formality, and the prints get passed around.

It is also a way to try out the idea before the wedding: the venue, the print size, the frame, what guests enjoy. You can then keep the same frame for the big day, simply changing the heading and the date.

Choosing an elegant frame and rewriting it

Wedding designs suit an engagement party perfectly: you just rewrite their headings. Perfect Circle frames each photo in a medallion of cosmos, lavender and sage foliage; on the one-photo strip, its heading, which reads “our wedding” in French on the sample, can say “Our engagement” instead. Taupe Monogram relies on a large monogram and headings you can rewrite or delete, plus an optional text field.

For a minimal look, Calligraphy & Heart places a solid heart between two names in calligraphy on a white background. If the party revolves around a toast, Champagne looks like a raised glass, with bubbles rising through pale gold. More ideas in the minimalist wedding and floral wedding collections.

What to write on the frame

Engagement wording shares the news simply. A few ideas:

  • “Our engagement”, with both names and the date;
  • “She said yes!” or “He said yes!”, for a lighter tone;
  • “Soon to be married”, followed by the wedding date if it is set;
  • your initials together, on a monogram design;
  • a hashtag to gather guests’ photos, which can be reused at the wedding.

A planned party or a surprise proposal

There are two situations. If guests are coming to celebrate an engagement that has already been announced, the frame can share the news directly: “Our engagement”, your names, the date. Prepare it a few days ahead and do a test print.

If the proposal is going to happen during the evening, keep the secret: prepare two versions of the same design, one neutral (“A lovely evening”, the date), the other saying “She said yes!”. Your designs are kept in your account, and you simply switch files in the photo booth software once the answer is given. The first prints after the proposal will find a natural place in the album.

Running the photo booth during the evening

An engagement party often takes place at home, in a private dining room or a small hall. Set the booth up near where people gather, but out of the way of foot traffic, and open it as soon as drinks are served: that is when guests start mingling.

  • Plan a few family photos: the couple with each set of parents, with siblings, then both families together.
  • Keep props elegant: flower crowns, bow ties, a “She said yes” sign.
  • Soft, steady light on the posing area avoids dark faces in the evening.
  • Ask someone to reload paper and tidy the props from time to time.

A guest book where everyone sticks in their print and writes a note to the couple makes a lovely keepsake; our photo booth guest book guide explains how to set one up.

Print size, files and printing

A 4×6 print holds one to three photos and readable text; a 2×6 strip lines up three poses, perfect for a sequence of kisses or funny faces. Our guide to choosing a photo booth print size compares the options.

Once the design is personalised, you download a high-resolution PNG overlay, transparent where the photos go, ready for your software; our guide to installing a template in dslrBooth covers the setup. Print a test copy before the evening, at 100% scale, with no fit-to-page option. Customising Perfect Circle takes a few minutes, with no account needed.

From engagement to wedding

If you love the frame, keep it for the wedding: change “Our engagement” to “Our wedding” and update the date. The text of your design can still be edited from your account. A nice touch: display a few engagement prints next to the photo booth on the wedding day, to show guests how far you have come since the announcement. To prepare the big day, our guide to planning a wedding photo booth covers location, timing and a planning timeline, and the wedding page gathers every style.
